RED OCTOBER

Well, if one had not been studying, then, this Saturday may come as a pleasant surprise when students sit the October SAT exam.

Weeks of exercises in Reading, Writing and Math will now be tested. I pray students will keep their wits about them, calm themselves and apply their knowledge well. It is all we can ask.

SCHEDULE FOR MOCK EXAMS

This Thursday, September 30, at 1 pm, we will have one group sit their Mock exam. Another group will sit theirs from 4-7 pm.

Results will be returned on Friday.

There are a few who will sit the exam online.

SAT EXAM

On Saturday, October 2, 2022, students will go to their assigned test centers, whether it is Campion, Priory, St. Andrew’s, Dinthill, Mt. Alvernia or Jamaica College.

Please get there early, say, 7:45 armed with

1) Your ticket

2) Your picture ID (not expired)

3) Your #2 pencils

4) Good eraser

5) Calculator

6) A snack

7) Leave cellphones in the car

8) And all signs of nervousness, low self- esteem, leave at the door!

9) Pray.

DIET

Please eat well before the exam. Avoid fried, dairy or starchy foods. They tend to make students soporific. Exercise and do not overdo activities, such as partying the night before an exam.

TO CRAM OR NOT TO CRAM

This action may have worked before CSEC or CAPE, but it will not do for SAT. If you had not done a lot of practice papers before the exam, the night before will hardly matter. Get a good eight hours of sleep instead.

Good luck, guys!

NOTICES

Do read this week’s notices below.

Hi Sandra,

Siena is hosting a live video chat tomorrow from 7-7:45 p.m. ET called College Admissions 101. It will be great info for both high school juniors and seniors. They don't need to be interested in Siena for it to be valuable.

Feel free to share this link with your students and families so they can request a reminder: http://live.siena.edu when we go live.

We're grateful for the opportunity to provide valuable resources like this to your school community! Last fall, we asked how we could help and got an overwhelming response. We ended up hosting 2,644 families for video chats. I am confident that students felt more prepared for the admissions process and college itself. And it all started with ideas from school counselors like you!

Also, our first fall open house is Saturday, October 8. Students interested in Siena can sign up at siena.edu/visit.

Thank you for your continued partnership,

Katie Szalda

Updates & Reminders from Carnegie Mellon

Dear Sandra, Greetings from Carnegie Mellon University! We hope you’ve had a safe and restful summer. As we begin a new academic year, we'd like to share some important updates and reminders for the upcoming year. Admission Updates As your students are beginning their college applications, there are a few important updates to keep in mind:

  • Test-Optional for Fall 2023: Carnegie Mellon will remain test-optional for first-year students applying Fall 2023.

  • Duolingo English Test: As a reminder, in addition to the TOEFL and IELTS exams, we now also accept the Duolingo English Test for English proficiency. All applicants whose native language is not English are required to submit official results of one of these exams.

For more information, check out our Fall 2023 frequently asked questions. Application Deadlines The Common Application is live! Here are our Fall 2023 application deadlines:

  • November 1, 2022: Early Decision 1

  • December 1, 2022: Regular Decision for the Schools of Drama and Music

  • January 3, 2023: Early Decision 2, Regular Decision, Early Admission, and transfer into the Schools of Art, Architecture and Design

  • February 15, 2023: Fall transfer into all colleges/schools except the College of Fine Arts

Engagement Opportunities We are excited to continue welcoming visitors to our campus this year. If your students are considering an in-person visit to our Pittsburgh campus, some highlights for them include:

  • Outdoor Campus Walking Route

  • On Campus Information Session

  • On Campus Tour

  • Admission Counseling Sessions

We are once again heading out on the road this fall and perhaps to a city near you. We hope to connect with you and your students along the way! Online programming continues to be offered for students to explore Carnegie Mellon virtually. If your students can’t make it to campus or an event when we visit your area, feel free to point them to our online experiences:

  • Information Sessions

  • Virtual Counseling Sessions

  • Virtual Campus Tours

  • Virtual Residence Hall Tours

Financial Aid We're committed to making a Carnegie Mellon education affordable through our financial aid program. We meet the demonstrated need of all admitted U.S. citizens, permanent residents and Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival (DACA) students. As a reminder, our FAFSA code is 003242, and our CSS Profile code is 2074. If any of your students are concerned about the cost of submitting the CSS Profile, please have them contact our office to receive a fee waiver. Important financial aid dates and deadlines for the upcoming year include:

  • The 2023-2024 FAFSA and CSS Profile open on October 1, 2022.

  • November 15, 2022 is the financial aid deadline for Early Decision 1 applicants.

  • January 3, 2023 is the financial aid deadline for Early Decision 2 applicants.

  • February 15, 2023 is the financial aid deadline to for Regular Decision, Early Admission and College of Fine Arts transfer applicants.

While these are suggested deadlines, we encourage students to meet them to avoid any delay in receiving a financial aid offer if admitted. Don't forget! Your students can get an estimate of their potential financial aid before they even apply using our Net Price Calculator Tool. While not a guarantee of financial aid, the Net Price Calculator is a great tool to begin financial planning for college. Your students can also check out our tutorial for directions to complete the Net Price Calculator. We also recently held an online information session about understanding financial aid and accessing aid at Carnegie Mellon. You can find a recording of that session here to share with your students. If you or your students have questions about the admission and financial aid processes or anything else, the Office of Admission is here to help. Feel free to call, email or chat with us during normal business hours. You can reach out directly to any of our staff for answers to your questions. Finally, you can find even more information in our resources for college counseling partners. We look forward to connecting with you this fall!

Sandra,As we enter the beginning of "fake fall" in Atlanta, I hope you are all now settled into the new school year.

The event will take place on Saturday, October 15 from 10AM to 2PM EST.

Fall Open House is geared towards all prospective undergraduate students (current high school sophomores & juniors, as well as current college students) who want to learn what it takes to become a part of the rich legacy and tradition of Howard University. At Open House, students and their families will have the opportunity to talk with current students, faculty, staff, and alumni. The program begins in Burr Gymnasium at 10AM followed by our “HU College Fair” where our undergraduate departments and special programs are invited to participate.

Our admission staff will be on site to answer questions, guide students through the application process, and help #FutureBison discover all that Howard has to offer. Additionally, our Student Ambassadors will lead tours of our beautiful hilltop campus. Following the event on campus, guests are invited to attend the second annual “Truth and Service Classic” football game at the Audi Field, where our Howard University Bison take on the Harvard Crimson. Open House guests will be provided with tickets to the game. All students are encouraged to register today to learn what it takes to become a part of the rich legacy and tradition of Howard University.
