Independence Blues

Updated: Aug 6, 2022

As Jamaica glides between Emancipation Day and Independence Day, many of us wonder what really did Emancipation and Independence bring us?

It seems we appear no better off as doomsayers predict. Crime is high and insensitive. The country is not providing good services, education is in a tailspin, the environment is suffering, we wonder just how fast we can move from Third to First World status?

The good news is that we have a cohort of students going out into the world to experience an international education. We pray they will think global and act local. That they will network to help transfer resources to help pull their Caribbean nations out of its mire.

The Caribbean has hope. We look to Mia Mottley In Barbados who has seemingly become the Caribbean’s voice. We are proud of her. Maybe, it is time to let women rule. Ergo, New Zealand!

Let us use Independence to grow, reflect and forge a stronger path forward.

Counselors,

We know that many of you work with students who have been waiting eagerly for the college application season to begin. We wanted to let you know we sent the following email to them today.

Dear Colleagues,

The 2022-23 Penn application is live, and we’re excited to share a new update with you. This year, the Penn Admissions team has reflected on the importance of gratitude and how expressing and receiving appreciation helps us shine a light on the individuals who make our lives brighter. In this spirit, we have added a new prompt to the Penn supplement that asks applicants to:

Write a short thank-you note to someone you have not yet thanked and would like to acknowledge.

We encourage you to read Dean Soule's blog to learn more about the motivation behind this change. And below, a moment of gratitude from Dean Soule for the role that you play in your students' success.

We hope that this point of reflection allows for a new way to honor the communities and people who support our applicants. Thank you for being a light in your students' lives.

Wishing you a safe and happy start to the school year.

With gratitude,

Penn Admissions

Dear Colleague, Our application for the fall 2023 academic year is open and I invite your students to apply to Reed! Here are a few things about Reed’s application process that I hope you’ll share with your students:

  • Reed is test blind. When your students apply, they will not be required to submit their ACT or SAT scores. If they submit a test score, we will not use it to make an admission decision.

  • Reed does not charge an application fee, which means there is no cost to apply.

If you have any questions about the application process or Reed in general, I encourage you to reach out to me at admission@reed.edu. I look forward to getting to know your students very soon. Best, Milyon Trulove Vice President and Dean of Admission & Financial Aid
