THE CLASSROOM SETTING

Sandra Bramwell

After 2 years of teaching online, it felt refreshingly good to be back in the classroom. I had a full class and attentive students. We will alternate between online and physical classes, but I cannot wait to revert to the physical classroom. I do know some of my Saturday students will be hankering to get into the classroom now that they have heard the new group got in...

NOTICES

I am happy to see that students have been following the notices and are setting interviews with colleges who are visiting the islands. So I am going to review a few interview tips here for those students.

INTERVIEW TIPS

Know the name of the Interviewer.

Be relaxed.

If you have written a resume, be able to go over all your attributes and extracurriculars in that interview.

Do your due diligence research on the institution.

Do not twitch a lot.

Wear your uniform or be interview suit ready.

Practise excellent hygiene ( I do not need to go there!)

No excessive ornamentation.

Watch your body language.

Firm handshake.

Full sentences, please, no monosyllabic answers.

And whew, you should be fine.

OCTOBER SAT

All should be registered and have printed their tickets.

Again, welcome to all new students and hope my July cohort are studying. I know the August results come out this Friday....oh boy! Congrats to those wonderful CXC and CAPE scores that have been reported to me thus far.

Dear Sandra, We are excited to invite you to the first in our Conversations Across the Desk series, which are monthly opportunities to connect school counselors to admissions representatives at Carleton, Claremont McKenna, Davidson and Middlebury Colleges. At this time of year, we sometimes hear confusion and some angst around topics related to Early Decision and Early Action programs. This session will hopefully debunk some myths about how ED/EA programs work and will address some of the ways in which students can use ED and EA programs to their best advantage in the admissions process. Topics are likely to include: is there an advantage to applying early? Is there a distinction between ED1 and EDII? What are the financial implications of applying to a school with a binding ED policy? We will address these and several other topics related to early admission programs, and will leave plenty of time for Q&A and engagement across the desk. Please register below (we request that only one individual per office registers); we look forward to seeing you soon on Zoom!

Conversations Across the Desk: Application Rounds Tuesday, September 13

12:00-12:45 p.m. Eastern Time (ET)

This is the first in a series that we will host once a month through December 2022. Keep an eye out for additional invitations for October 7, November 10, and December 13. Sincerely,

Rachelle Ehrman, Claremont McKenna College, rehrman@cmc.edu Sam Prouty, Middlebury College, sprouty@middlebury.edu Holly Buttrey, Carleton College, hbuttrey@carleton.edu Kaye-Lani Laughna, Davidson College, kalaughna@davidson.edu

Hello Sandra, As you may have heard, the University of Miami is test-optional for students applying for Spring and Fall 2023. In addition, we will require a supplemental essay. We hope you will find our test-optional and essay tips videos helpful in understanding this component of our application process so that you can support your students. We will continue our institutional commitment to need-based financial aid. The University’s modified approach to financial aid, which includes meeting 100 percent of demonstrated financial need, will open up our dynamic and unique University of Miami experience for all admitted students. With this policy, the University reaffirms its commitment to excellence and takes another step toward bringing a world-class education within reach for more students, while working to reduce student debt. Sincerely,

Nate Crozier Assistant Vice President Undergraduate Admission and Marketing admissions.miami.edu
