Since the pandemic, reading and Math scores have fallen dramatically across the United States. Students just are not reading. It comes as no surprise that here in Jamaica, when America sneezes, we cough and loudly.
Students struggle with Math concepts and critical reading skills. They may have earned a distinction or credit in CXC Language and still do poorly at Reading on the SAT exam. I know it is the lack of good reading material, no access, little resources. So for once, I turn to online subscriptions and there should the story begin. Students should use the app to find a SAT word per day and be wolfing down visually scholarly articles recommended at start of the course.
Mr. Karenga espouses the Khan Academy for Math drills. I for one know that it is strong perhaps for Math, but not for the Verbal aspect of the exam.
Get on with reading widely! If you do not have a list of the magazines, email me.

Dear Colleague, If your students know that Reed is right for them, applying Early Decision (ED) by November 15 is a smart choice. I hope you’ll encourage them to watch this video in which current Reedies share about their experiences with the ED process. We want your students to know that because they receive a decision in December, ED means that they get to enjoy the rest of their senior year with the added security of having selected a college. If you have students who know that Reed is right for them, encourage them to apply Early Decision by November 15. Reach out to me at admission@reed.edu with any questions you have. I also invite your students to attend Is Early Decision Right for Me? on Thursday, October 27, at 4 p.m. PDT to learn more about the benefits of applying and finding out early. Sincerely, Milyon Trulove Vice President and Dean of Admission & Financial Aid

Expanding the Colgate Commitment
A Financial Aid Initiative in Access and Affordability
All eligible domestic students from families with annual income levels up to $175,000 will have federal loans replaced with University grants as part of the Colgate Commitment, beginning in the 2023–2024 academic year — an expansion from the current income threshold of $150,000. In addition, students on financial aid will have their aid packages expanded to meet the average cost for textbooks and other academic expenses as part of Colgate’s efforts to reduce the financial burden on students with financial need.
Estimate Your Aid
Families can estimate their share of college costs and how much financial aid they may be eligible to receive. Colgate offers two cost calculators that will help your family determine how much you may be expected to pay.
Sincerely,
Gary Ross
