Justin left this past weekend, having received his student visa....at the airport. Many students are flying in early to satisfy the quarantine conditions. For incoming freshmen, it appears to be fine. They will purchase the room items, use during quarantine and then move into their pre-ordained dorms right after.
But what of those who were told to vacate their dorms and given 24 hour notice a few months ago? How they returned to Jamaica without anything from their dorms..The schools put their items in storage. have they fumigated it? When sophomores, juniors and seniors return, under quarantine conditions...they have to buy linen and foodstuff, once again, under these stringent conditions. Come on, universities, give these kids a break!
So Monday was the test trial. Our first batch of students faced the guillotine- the US embassy. We knew though the 45th had pulled back on the notion of international student deportation, that as unpredictable as these times were, we could expect any and every thing during the visa interviews.
Well, the good news...most got their visas, thus far...with just one being asked to return with supplemental materials. Not bad. It seems the most pressing issue is the class schedule and whether one's class schedule is hybrid or in class tutorials.
Our students will make it through...whew!
So, visa consultations are the name of the game. Once you have booked the date, please come in for a consultation.
Still en route...
In full session...but registration is still open. Come on...
So within one week, we are in a tizzy! We heard deportation, no F-1 visas, no physical classes, merely online classes...and it seemed that the 45th had not thought through this debacle. Tapping into a $48 million industry, it seems that the universities were about to buck the system...a war between the 45th and universities had been launched.
Now, I felt less shaken sending my students off, to bastions of intelligence ...My students need to be shrouded in cloaks of intelligence.
So the 45th rescinded this ban on international students. He backed down. More arsenal for a political power move.
The students were frantic. We had to appease those worried minds.
For those who just started classes, they remained undaunted. A good sign for the future.
I knew this Presidency was going to be a volatile one. When interviewed four years ago on the Cliff Hughes radio programme, I was interviewed about the potential outcome of a Trump Presidency. I said it would be helter skelter. It seems my vision was right.
Now, when students are getting student visa appointments to go in for visas, the bangarang has begun.
Here is what we know as factual:
1)Students who remained in the States on campus or at home, should their current university, decide to opt for full online classes in 2020-2021, then they are to transfer to a school that has in class tutorials.
Deduction: Those on scholarship, will their scholarships convert? Or do they just go home to continue online classes at home with roughshod wifi systems globally or in Third World count...
Everyone is being denied their request for an expedited appointment. It is understandable. Covid infections are rising in the US for Texas, Florida, California and Arizona.
America is largely suggesting for the Fall term that you go for your visas, but stay home for the Fall semester. Not a bad idea.
Some of you have decided to take off the year. The watch and wait approach. Others want to dive right in and are anxious to go, despite the threats of a Covid and racial pandemic. A few have selected the option of sitting out Fall and entering Spring.
Do what you feel comfortable doing. I will back you, regardless.
See you next week.
