The Colgate University Visit Part 1 Wednesday Blog

Hi everyone!

Yes, it is freezing MeiJun Cai and thanks for calling me just before bedtime (ha! ha!)...But congrats again for being our candidate who made it into practically every Art school he applied to..

Please note that Colgate is not far from Syracuse University and 10 minutes away from Hamilton College. It is dairy territory and in a small town. But things must be great as we are being put up in their newly renovated hotel, yes, dahlings, The Colgate Inn, exqusitely decorated. We were their first ever guests and oh so christened their beds, towels, you get the picture.

I will have Part 2 to the Colgate University visit next week, as I actually see the campus today but too late to write the blog. I am actually writing the blog at 4 a.m. Wednesday morning so why it says Tuesday, go figure! At the Faculty dinner last night, I would say from that initial dinner that Colgate has some fascinating faculty members Professor Jun in Psychology and Neurosciences, a loveable character, my Puerto Rican Multicultural Officer from New Jersey (engaging discussion), the Trinidadian Environmental Science Professor (and she remembered my name), see, quite a dynamic, multicultural staff where 40% are professors of Color...trying to be as international as possible...So Graeme Welds, our recently admitted student to Colgate, some possibilities here...

More College Acceptances Stars

Gabrielle Barnett's record scholarship to Mount Holyoke University attests to the fact that scores are not the critical factor but the content of the application.

The boys just keep getting better as I had predicted before the acceptance letters started rolling out....I simply kept on saying that the boys were some of my best essay writers and score recipients this year. The acceptances have thus far confirmed my predictions. Here are a few more stellar ones...and might i add even one young man is being flown up to the majordomo Notre Dame to see the school, they like him that much...go boys! Khamal may have lost in the School Challenge Quiz production against Ardenne, but he made up when he got into Columbia University..David made Stanford, his dream school and Jordan to Cornell..How about Chad Hucey who made it into Worcester Polytechnic, his dream school (he had visited them last year on his summer school choice, more later in this blog on summer schools)

Graeme Welds: Bates, Swarthmore,Bowdoin, Colgate
Jordan Thompson:Amherst, University of Chapel Hill, Vanderbilt, Cornell and Rice University
Phillip Pryce: Bentley, Northeastern, Notre Dame
Khamal Clayton: Columbia University
Mark Levy: University of British Columbia, McGill, Wesleyan University, University of Miami, University of Toronto
Chad Hucey: Worcester Polytechnic University
David Young: Stanford University, Columbia University and Vassar College
Kimberly Tate: Worcester Polytechnic
Jason Murray - Santa Clara University

To our Graduate student, Andrina Powell who got a record scholarship to do her Master's in Architecture at the University of Maryland. She will not be charged the fees for international students, but in-state fees for locals, amassed a teaching assistant position, an RA position for free room and board, should I go on? Good going to our GRE student...

Natalie Edwards of St. Andrew's High fame, congrats to you on attaining your schools in the shortest time I have ever had to prepare a student for consultation: Marist College, Quinnipiac University, Alfred University and Gonzaga University. Also congrats to Kimberley Tate on her acceptance to Worcester Polytechnic University!

Good shot guys!

SSAT Seminar at the Chinese Restaurant this Saturday, April 2, 2011. Should be fun! "From Acceptance to What Next"..catered by Ms. Margaret Silvera...Oh and do not get jealous, you other groups, the big to do is coming in May, and that's a grand gala, but we have to take care of the babies first. They have a deadline to commit to their schools by this April 10-that's why the rush!

Hey Rushell!

This is our drop dead gorgeous student visiting from Bard University who has managed to stay trim because of a heavy dance rotation there (hint to my students coming back to say hi -participate in a physical activity whilst away!!!)..We also congratulate her on making it China again this summer (yes, she now converses in Chinese and can overhear conversations in airport lobbies) and was made a Resident Advisor..know that great job that gives you free room and board whilst having your own apartment with a salary. Good going Rushell, that happens when you listen to your teacher! Good seeing you...and that curry goat..master Chef!

From the New York office!
I am returning with more options for summer programs Lower Sixers, so see me to get a view of those programs (should be back on Friday)...exciting.

The staff so worked me for the past two weeks, I was not able to complete a few chapters though I attended the BIAJ symposium to hear publishing details...Check out Jamaica's first Book Festival next year where our book will be featured. Jamaica is so cosmopolitan! No need to travel to the Miami Book Festival anymore...

See you next week for Part II to the Colgate visit..

And They Keep Rolling In Wednesday Blog!

HEART CONGRATULATIONS to Monique Arnold who made Columbia University! Not because it is my alma mater, but it was her preferred choice. It is a very good feeling when you have worked hard, set your goals and the reality comes through.

I also want to congratulate the girls of the SSAT group (hold on, boys!). When it is a question of sports taking the top scholarship awards every year for boarding schools, it is heartening to see that the girls, by sheer force of their intellect and extracurricular activities, commanded scholarships in record amounts of $$$$! Again congrats!

What about Shakira Banhan who single-handedly captured great scholarships but locked the 3 top Business schools in America - what a feat - Bentley, Babson and Bryant! Excellent show!

To the boys, you did it. Special hearty congrats to Aaron and Nicholas. Aaron Johnson(SSAT), who did not realize that he would be leaving Campion to head overseas. It was a strange concept to even his parents, but his studies, grades and all, left him with a hearty future, heading overseas...Again, good show.

I am simply ecstatic.

We visited Calabar High School and are slated for McGrath, York Castle and Wolmer's Boys' this week. Encouraged to see over 300 third formers at Calabar sit quietly and listen to Career Options overseas. They asked poignant questions and I just want to say, Jamaica may yet see "our boys back" in fine order.

Seminar -SSAT Group
"From Acceptance to Boarding School" - this seminar is for all our SSAT parents and students who were accepted. Tropical Chinese Cuisine, the restaurant next door to the Kingston office is permitting us to come and herald our SSAT champions by regaling us with the space and food while we discuss the courses ahead, how parents plan for this, and college after....I will summon my past parents, Chai and Yap to be there to assist us. So come on down early - April 2, 2011 from 10 - 12.

We shall have a grand time, you all did well. Don't be late. This is fair warning to the students from Mandeville and Kingston. I will try to do a repeat session without the fanfare and food in Montego Bay. But I urge Montego Bay to drive in, if they can.

The Grand Farewell ceremony for all students will be late May.

On Thursday morning, 7:30 a.m., we will be interviewed on Ronnie Thwaites' program "Independent Talk", March 10, 2011.

Ash Wednesday

What will we actually give up for these 40 days and nights? Think seriously about life changes and stick to it. A great formula for college and university.

Jason Murray: Lake Forest College
Kimberley Forbes: St. John's University

FAFSA

Many of you have completed your FAFSA. I am asking you to complete your SAR reports that come in the form of an email confirmation. These forms must be signed before the entire FAFSA is completed. So do not think that your initial form submitted, along with the first round of signatures is sufficient. The FAFSA agency will then send you confirmation and request that you submit your signed approval of the details done from the first form sent in.

March 5th, 2011

The ads are out, the interviews on the radio are up and running, Mr. James Morton arrives tomorrow for his lecture on "Addressing the Complex Needs of Teens". For parents, counselors and principals. Encourage all with issues on teenage rebelliousness, absenteeism, drugs and alcohol issues and generally, and other emotional issues that contribute to under-performance in schools. It should be good. It is slated for 10 a.m. at the Knutsford Court Hotel, Blue Mountain Room.

Summer School for 2011

Again, this is the final call for our Lower Vi'ers studying next year 2012. We hope that you will get those applications off in time. Summer school prepares you for college by introducing you to what it will feel like for Fall 2012. It also adds the rich experience of how you may handle your college classes as you are now introduced to professors and college level classes. Don't be late.

Medical Students from UWI

We are happy to help the UWI Medical students seeking internship stints at US medical colleges. There is a race against time to get these in early to coincide with the UWi deadlines for participation.

My absence for March:

I am around, but not around. As I mentioned last week, I must complete my book and hope that you will only have me surface from the hiding spot for grave emergencies...smile...tall order, huh?

Love you all, but the blog continues...
